'POETESS OF SINHALA CINEMA' NO MORE!

Sad to know, Sri Lankan veteran filmmaker Sumitra Peries passed away!

She was the first Sri Lankan female film director. From teenage drama 'Gehenu Lamai' (1978) to romantic 'Yahaluvo' (2007) & thriller 'Vaishnavee' (2018) she made different genres popular films. Her contribution to the development of Sinhala Cinema was commendable!

Sumitra Peries was the wife of Sri Lankan legendary filmmaker Lester James Peries who left this world four years ago! That time I wrote homage article on him here!

I still remember meeting to this great filmmaker couple of Sri Lanka..Lester James Peries and Sumitra Peries..in our 'International Film Festival of India' (IFFI) held at New Delhi in 2000. [Here is that photograph].

Humble homage to her!!

BERGMAN'S 'VIRGIN SPRING' FAME BIRGITTA..80+

I always remember this an innocent beautiful face of Karin the character sensitively portrayed by Birgitta Pettersson in renowned Swedish Film- maker Ingmar Bergman's great film 'Jungfrukallan'!

Metaphoric climax of' film 'The Virgin Spring' (1960).
I wrote a lot on 'The Virgin Spring' ('Jungfrukallan'/1960) one of my most favourite films from the history of world cinema! It was a rape and revenge tale..which is still contemporary! Its metaphoric climax touched the heart! This film won 'Oscar's 'Best Foreign Language Film' Award!

This graceful Swedish actress Birgitta Pettersson appeared on screen in 1954 with novel based film 'Salka Valka' directed by Arne Mattsson! Then in 1958 she entered into great Ingmar Bergman's cinema with 'The Magician'! She was also there in his television film 'In the Presence of a Clown' (1997).

Today is 84th Birthday of this veteran actress!!

Warm Regards!!
